Promoting Gut Health
Hey There!
As you probably know, I am a Physician Associate with a Doctor of Medical Science degree and over 25 years of experience in primary care, internal medicine, emergency medicine, and, currently, chronic pain and orthopedics.
I’m excited to share insights on how our gut health can significantly influence our overall well-being — both physically and mentally, especially for women.
Did you know that conditions like constipation and bloating are more common in women than men?
This is partly because of differences in our gut anatomy; for instance, women tend to have longer colons, which can make procedures like colonoscopies a bit tricky.
It's definitely a topic worth delving into next time!
Understanding the Gut Microbiome
The gut microbiome — an incredible community of tiny living organisms, primarily bacteria — plays a crucial role in digestion and health.
With approximately 100 trillion bacteria living in our guts, encompassing more than 500 types such as Bacteroides, Clostridium, and Lactobacillus, it’s remarkable that the number of these helpful bacteria rivals the number of human cells in our bodies.
These microorganisms not only aid in digestion, but also protect us. However, an imbalance known as Dysbiosis can lead to various diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, and even mental health conditions like depression and anxiety.
Why Lifestyle Matters
The way we live — our diet, physical activity, sleep, and stress levels — strongly affects our gut bacteria and our overall health.
This week, I encourage you to make dietary changes that benefit your gut.
Eating more high-fiber foods can help support the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Faecalibacterium, Roseburia, and Akkermansia.
This can improve your metabolic health and reduce inflammation.
For this week, focus on these steps for gut health:
Fiber-rich foods
Hydration
Daily movement
Stress support
Healthy bowel habits
Consider adding high-fiber foods like chia seeds, oats, beans, berries, leafy greens, ground flaxseed, and sweet potatoes to your meals.
Today's Gentle Goal
Add one fiber-rich food to your diet.
Remember, your gut is your foundation; support it gently and consistently, and your whole body will thrive. Start small, stay steady, and trust the process.
Healthy gut, healthy glow — because true wellness starts within.
