Diabetes and Sarcopenia
Managing diabetes is tricky for patients dealing with sarcopenia, which is basically muscle loss.
Since our muscles play a big role in how our bodies take up glucose, losing muscle mass can worsen insulin resistance.
It’s like a double-edged sword where one condition feeds into the other, making it tougher to keep blood sugar levels in check.
Key Challenges
There are a few major hurdles we face.
For starters, people with sarcopenia often need higher protein intakes, but we also have to be mindful of their kidney health.
Plus, designing safe exercise programs for those who struggle with strength can be a real challenge.
And let’s not forget that their reduced muscle mass means they might be at higher risk for hypoglycemia, given their bodies aren’t able to buffer glucose as effectively anymore.
Also, standard weight metrics can sometimes hide the severity of muscle loss, making it even harder to assess the situation.
Working Together
Effective management really calls for a strong care team working together.
A health and lifestyle wellness coach plays an important role in working with the client to create an individualized meal and exercise plan.
It takes a combined approach that includes targeted nutrition — think adequate protein, vitamin D, and an anti-inflammatory diet — along with resistance training.
However, breaking this cycle is no small feat; it requires consistent, long-term effort.
Today's Gentle Goal
Include a source of protein at one meal to help support muscle health and stable blood sugar!
